Both are among the most popular languages in the world, both have enormous communities and both can get you hired. So which should you learn first?

The honest answer: it depends on what you want to build. Let’s make that decision easy.

The same task in both languages

Here’s a tiny program that greets a list of people:

names = ["Ayesha", "Ali", "Sara"]

for name in names:
    print(f"Hello, {name}!")

const names = ["Ayesha", "Ali", "Sara"];

for (const name of names) {
  console.log(`Hello, ${name}!`);
}

Python reads almost like English, with no semicolons or curly braces — indentation defines the structure. JavaScript has a little more syntax, but it’s still very approachable.

Where each language shines

If you want to…

Learn first

Build websites and interactive web apps

JavaScript

Make mobile apps (with React Native)

JavaScript

Work with data, analytics or spreadsheets

Python

Get into AI and machine learning

Python

Automate boring tasks and write scripts

Python

Build browser extensions

JavaScript

Do backend / server development

Either — both are excellent

Why choose Python

Gentle learning curve — clean, readable syntax lets you focus on concepts, not punctuation

The language of AI and data science — libraries like NumPy, pandas, PyTorch and scikit-learn dominate the field

Amazing for automation — rename 1,000 files, scrape a website or process Excel sheets in a few lines

Widely taught — most universities and introductory courses use it

Why choose JavaScript

It runs in every browser — no installation needed; open DevTools and start coding

Instant visual results — build something you can see and click on from day one, which is hugely motivating

Full-stack with one language — JavaScript (and TypeScript) runs the front end, and Node.js runs the back end

Huge job market for web development, from startups to large companies

Can’t decide? Ask yourself: “What’s the first project I’d love to build?” If it’s a website, choose JavaScript. If it’s anything involving data, AI or automation, choose Python.

Common myths

“I need to pick the ‘best’ language.” There isn’t one. Programming concepts — variables, loops, functions, data structures, problem solving — transfer between languages. Your second language will take a fraction of the time to learn.

“I need to be good at maths.” For most web development and automation, basic arithmetic is enough. Data science and machine learning do use more statistics, but you can learn it as you go.

“I’m too old / too late to start.” People start programming successfully at every age. Consistency matters far more than starting early.

A simple 30-day starter plan

Week 1: Variables, data types, conditions and loops

Week 2: Functions, lists/arrays and dictionaries/objects

Week 3: Build a small project (a to-do app, a quiz game or a file organiser)

Week 4: Learn Git, put your project on GitHub and start a second, slightly bigger project

Avoid “tutorial hell” — endlessly watching courses without building anything. The real learning happens when you get stuck on your own project and figure it out.

The verdict

Both are fantastic first languages, and you’ll likely learn both eventually. Choose Python for data, AI and automation; choose JavaScript for anything on the web. Then stop researching and start coding — the best language to learn is the one you actually practise every day.

Both are beginner-friendly, in huge demand and free to learn.
